What is hypnotherapy?

The misconception and impression that some people have is that hypnosis is used to make people give up control of themselves or that they are made to run around like a chicken on stage – these things are NOT true!

Hypnosis is in fact all about the client gaining more control in their lives, not less. You (the client)
are in control throughout the whole process, it doesn’t matter how deep you allow yourself to relax, you and your mind will be fully aware of what is going on at every stage, from beginning to end.

Hypnosis is most importantly a natural state of mind, which means that virtually every person has the natural capacity for response to hypnosis. There is nothing unnatural or supernatural about hypnosis, it is a natural state of physical, mental and emotional relaxation, along with a heightened state of awareness.

What does it feel like?

The change of consciousness is extremely comfortable and relaxing, similar to those moments
just before falling asleep. During the process you will feel very relaxed but your mind will still be highly focused and aware. This in itself is very beneficial; particularly for those suffering with stress and anxiety issues, as it relaxes, refreshes and invigorates the mind and body.

Hypnosis is a way of moving into a perfectly natural state of mind that you actually move in and out of several times a day yourself without any assistance. Everyone has experienced this trance like state, although they may not have called it hypnosis.

Is it safe?

We all go in and out of different levels of consciousness all day. Daydreaming, reading, and
driving are all examples of every day tasks when we may enter an altered state of awareness.

For example, have you ever had the experience of driving along the motorway and suddenly realized that you passed your exit several miles back? Or have you ever been so caught up in a TV programme, a book, a film or computer game that you've lost track of time, or not realized that someone has been talking to you?

These are all everyday examples of a change of consciousness and an altered state of awareness. Hypnosis is just another example of an altered state of awareness.  There are many techniques that hypnotherapists use, that are all completely ethical and safe. Which technique used to assist a client will depend on their requirements and needs.

When a Hypnotherapist guides you into hypnosis, they are not asking you to experience anything strange that you haven't experienced before, and this is why sometimes people come out of trance unsure as to whether they were actually hypnotized or not, as it is such a familiar feeling. The extraordinary quality of relaxation you experience with the hypnotic trance though is usually very different.

Am I expected to do anything?

Yes absolutely.  I ask that you are willing to make the changes for yourself, and that you need to be willing to work with me.  I am not able to wave a wand and make things better, but I can give you the tools to help you understand yourself or the particular incident that you have come here for help.

What conditions can hypnosis help?

Hypnosis is used to treat a variety of psychological and somatic problems. Many medical issues
can also be dealt with by using hypnosis. If clients are on any medication, hypnotherapy is only undertaken once consent is gained from the local GP or the therapist’s supervisor.  This is for the safety of the client.  Hypnotherapy can be used for the following:

    Phobias

    Habits

Is hypnotherapy for me?

If you make the choice to change and want the change more than the opposing issue, then I would say yes.  However, everything can be discussed in greater detail in your consultation. You are free to ask as many questions as you wish, and even after the consultation if you choose not to continue that is your choice which is also respected. If you choose to continue I am here to assist you, to listen without judging and to show you how to use the tools that you already have.
