Northamptonshire Hypnotherapy
Pain Relief

Using hypnosis for pain relief or pain control

Hypnosis can substantially reduces or eliminate pain completely, so for this reason hypnotherapy
is not used where the cause of the pain is unknown. Pain is a protection for the body and I am only prepared to consult with clients for pain relief, where the client has received medical advice, and the cause has been diagnosed, or the medical practitioner has confirmed that the pain is serving no useful purpose; otherwise more damage than good could be done.

When can hypnosis be used to treat pain?

If the underlying cause is known and your doctor gives permission, hypnosis can be very effective
in relieving pain. Pain should never be treated for its own sake, but Hypnotherapy is used in a variety of situations for treating pain.  For example:

Post-operative pain - where traditional painkillers aren't appropriate, perhaps because
the patient is afraid of needles or allergic to medication.

Phantom limb pain - amputees sometimes experience pain from limbs which have been
removed, and research has shown that hypnosis has had impressive results in treating
        this kind of pain.

Learning self-hypnosis is also a useful tool in preparing for childbirth.
